District CFO to retire this summer

After 30 years with the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District, Chief Financial Officer/Treasurer Scott Gainer has announced he will retire on July 31.  

"Throughout these three decades, I have been privileged to work alongside exceptional educators, administrators, board members, and district staff, all united by a shared commitment to our students and community. As CFO, I have always strived to ensure fiscal integrity, transparency, and responsible stewardship of the district's resources,” said Gainer. “I take great pride in the collaborative efforts that have resulted in balanced budgets, strategic financial planning, and the ability to invest in programs and initiatives that directly benefit our students and staff. It has been a true honor to play a role in supporting the educational mission that defines our district.”

“Mr. Gainer’s positive impact on CH-UH schools cannot be overstated,” said Superintendent Elizabeth Kirby. “I see his values and skills reflected in his team and colleagues, and these will serve us well as our district enters this next chapter. We wish Mr. Gainer the absolute best in his much-deserved retirement ahead.”

During his tenure, Gainer helped lead the district through multiple levies, contract negotiations, and capital projects, in addition to advocacy efforts regarding school funding and vouchers. He has saved the district millions of dollars over the years through efficient and effective operations, cost-savings measures, and maximizing the usage of grants and other revenue sources. 

“Our community’s tax dollars have been in the most capable of hands over the last three decades and, as we search for our next CFO/treasurer, we are committed to ensuring a smooth transition,” said Malia Lewis, Cleveland Heights-University Heights Board of Education president. “Our board has set high standards for fiduciary responsibility, experience, and belief in the promise of public schools.”

Gainer has been firmly committed to transparency and excellence in financial reporting during his tenure, winning awards in financial reporting for 25 consecutive years from the Association of School Business Officials, Government Finance Officers Association, and the Ohio Auditor of State, among others.

"The district and the cities we serve are incredibly diverse and inclusive, and I have always felt accepted by this community. I am profoundly grateful for the memories, relationships, and experiences that will forever hold a special place in my heart,” said Gainer.

The district has partnered with the Educational Service Center of the Western Reserve to lead a comprehensive, community-driven search for its next chief financial officer/treasurer. This collaborative effort aims to identify a leader who embodies Cleveland Heights-University Heights values and vision for the future.
