Seeing Cedar Lee through new eyes

Gabrielle enjoying the Stone Oven patio this summer.

Before our daughter came into our lives, my husband and I frequented the Cedar Lee district, just a five-minute walk from our house. Those were simpler days, filled with leisurely strolls, spontaneous date nights, and discovering all the hidden gems this neighborhood has to offer.

Now, as parents, it's incredible to realize how seamlessly Gabrielle has fit into our beloved routine. Cedar Lee has not just remained our go-to spot, but has evolved with us, supporting our family in ways I never anticipated.

As a new parent, my appreciation for local businesses has shifted. These places have become touchstones of our community—spaces that have embraced Gabi just as they did us. Every visit is more than just an outing; it’s a chance for her to connect, explore, and grow. Watching Gabi experience this neighborhood is a joy, and it has reaffirmed the importance of supporting small businesses that make Cleveland Heights such a great place.

Take Nubeigel, for instance, where the bagels and iced coffee are a staple for us. The owner and employees have watched Gabi grow up, always greeting her with smiles and warmth. I even recall the day that Josh held Gabi (who was a few months old at the time) so I could eat my bagel with two hands!

Then there's Stone Oven, where we joke Gabi goes to see and be seen! The bustling atmosphere means there's always someone to engage with, making each visit feel like a new adventure for her. She has even been introduced to gazpacho there, which we were pleasantly surprised to find she enjoys!

A truly special part of our routine is grabbing a coffee from Phoenix—where the baristas take the time to play peekaboo with Gabi—and heading over to S’il Vous Play. It’s a perfect space for Gabi to be a kid, and we even hosted her birthday party there.

And when it’s time for an adult beverage, we never feel out of place with a toddler in tow at Voodoo Brewing. Their shoestring fries have become a favorite and a great distraction for Gabi as we enjoy a cold beer!

Being a parent has changed my perspective on so many things, but one thing that remains constant is my love for Cedar Lee and its small businesses. Supporting them feels more personal than ever.
