LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS / University Heights City Council meeting highlights AUGUST 13, 2024, special meeting

Present were Mayor Michael Dylan Brennan and council members Michele Weiss (vice mayor), Christopher Cooney, Brian J. King, John P. Rach, Sheri Sax, and Win Weizer. Threse Marshall was excused. Also present were Clerk of Council Kelly Thomas, Law Director Bradric T. Bryan, Finance Director Dennis Kennedy, and City Engineer Brenda Mockbee. The meeting ran for 15 minutes.

Council actions

Council accepted the contract, in an amount not to exceed $189,906, of Carron Asphalt Paving, Inc., which was the only bidder for resurfacing and preparing pickleball and tennis courts. Council’s acceptance of the contract means the work can start next week. Carron comes with good recommendations and has done similar work for other municipalities. The work will reconfigure two of the existing tennis courts into four pickleball courts with one tennis court remaining. The bid was slightly higher than the estimate of the city engineer, but she recommended accepting the contract.

Council accepted a Sustainables Stores Grant of $7,960 from from Cuyahoga County to help retailers discontinue single-use plastic bags. The grant money will enable retailers, other than large grocery stores, to participate in the program and purchase reuseable bags. The county program is for one year but could continue if the county provides the option again.

Council accepted a grant of $3,751 from The Ohio Arts Council to be used for the city’s 2024 Fall Fest. This is the second year the grant was offered to the city.

Council amended, on emergency, appropriations ordinances to include the funds received from the grants referenced above and for the projected cost of the Fall Fest.
