LEI alums help cultivate literary legacy
Lake Erie Ink (LEI), a creative writing organization, has long been a nurturing ground for young writers, providing them with the tools, support, and community necessary to hone their craft. Over the years, the organization has evolved significantly, not only in its offerings but also in the vibrant community it fosters. A testament to its enduring impact is the phenomenon of former participants returning to contribute as teachers, volunteers, or board members of Fresh Ink, the organization’s guiding body.
Founded with a vision to empower youth through creative expression, LEI offers an array of programs, including workshops, summer camps, and writing clubs, catering to diverse age groups and skill levels. The environment at Lake Erie Ink is one of encouragement and growth, where young voices are celebrated and nurtured.
One remarkable aspect of Lake Erie Ink’s evolution is the return of its former participants in new roles. These individuals, once young writers themselves, come back as mentors, eager to give back to the community that helped shape their literary journey.
These teachers bring authenticity to their role, having experienced firsthand the transformative power of LEI’s programs. Their familiarity with the organization’s ethos allows them to connect with current students on a profound level, fostering a sense of continuity and legacy.
“When I was a participant,” recalled Elana Pitts, “I was looking for a community of people like me so I wouldn't be as lonely. I found that in the poetry club and events hosted by Lake Erie Ink. Going from searching for inclusivity to being able to provide that for the youth by working with LEI is a full circle moment! I am happy to give and do what I can to help others achieve their voices!”
Many LEI alumni choose to volunteer, and assist in various capacities, from helping run workshops to organizing events. Their presence is invaluable, as they not only support the staff but also serve as role models for the current cohort of young writers.
A number of former participants have taken on leadership roles by joining the board of Fresh Ink. As board members, they help steer the organization, making strategic decisions that ensure its sustainability and growth. Their insight as former participants provides a unique and crucial perspective in the boardroom. They understand the needs and aspirations of young writers and can advocate for programs and initiatives that resonate with LEI’s core mission. Their involvement in governance signifies a deep commitment to the organization's future and a dedication to preserving its legacy.
The return of former LEI participants as teachers, volunteers, and board members is a testament to LEI’s enduring influence and success. As these individuals return to the fold, they bring with them a wealth of experience and a deep appreciation for the power of creative expression, helping to ensure that LEI remains a beacon of literary creativity and community.
