The Alcazar hosts spring talk, and offers a chance to look inside this local landmark

You know it. You’ve passed it many times. Do you ever wonder what goes on inside? The Alcazar, a Cleveland Heights landmark, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and has stood at the top of Cedar Hill for 88 years.

On Tuesday, April 26, at 7 p.m., the public is invited to take a look inside, as The Alcazar hosts “Conquering Clutter,” a talk by professional organizers JoEllen Salkin and Muffy Kaesberg, owners of Organizing 4 U.

Just in time for spring, Salkin and Kaesberg will share tips on how to declutter and organize, and conquer clutter for good. Last year, the pair attracted more than 125 guests to their talk, which will be held again in the fifth floor ballroom, and is free and open to all.

The Alcazar opened in 1923 as posh residential hotel, drawing well-heeled guests and Hollywood stars with its elegance, exotic style and eccentricity.

Unlike its Tudor and Georgian-inspired neighbors in Cleveland Heights’ Cedar Fairmount neighborhood, The Alcazar displays a unique Spanish-Moorish style. The architect, Harry T. Jeffery, also designed the Van Sweringen brothers’ stately mansion on South Park Boulevard in Shaker Heights.

Today, The Alcazar’s primary mission is to serve as a comfortable and affordable home to independent senior adults. Residents choose from a variety of floor plans, from large efficiencies to one- and two-bedroom apartments, with one, two or three full bathrooms. All apartments have full kitchens, dining areas and generous closets, and residents enjoy complimentary utilities, social activities and housekeeping.

The Alcazar also attracts short- and long-term guests from around the world, who stay in its fully furnished rooms and and apartments while on temporary assignment in Cleveland. Stays range from a few days to more than a year. Other newcomers to the Cleveland area stay at The Alcazar while they search for a permanent home, and local families recommend it to their out-of-town guests as a cozy, nearby place to stay.

The Alcazar is located at 2450 Derbyshire Road, Cleveland Heights. For more information, visit www.thealcazar.com, or call 216-321-5400.

Janet Hildebrandt is the marketing manager for The Alcazar.
