Emerging Artists on view at Heights Arts

Join Heights Arts at 5 p.m. Friday, June 14th for the opening reception of Emergent 2024. First presented in 2015, Emergent celebrates the strength of the northeast Ohio region as a training ground for the great artists of tomorrow.
Emerging artists include painter Jules Ahern who uses found objects to reckon with home memories, oil painter Erjon Hajnaj who invokes dramatic tones with Renaissance painting styles, mixed-media artist Kasey Kania whose work is centered on the natural world, Sylvia Munodawafa who draws inspiration from the rich cultural heritage of Zimbabwe to explore identity and spirituality through her paintings and sculptures, self-taught oil painter Grace Nestor-Louie who creates playful scenes of nature in vivid colors, visual artist DeAnne Smith who explores mico-patterns with acrylic paintings, and painter Mar’Cess Stubbs who explores family histories and identity through traditional techniques and the human figure.
In addition to these rising talents, Spotlight: Destiny Moore opens in conjunction with Emergent 2024. In this spotlight, Destiny Moore presents a collection of black and white street photography that captures the beauty in the mundane.

Mystical Reveries

Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber – Mystery Sonata No. 1, “The Annunciation”
Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach – Sonata in G Minor
Robert Schumann – Adagio and Allegro for Horn and Piano
John Adams – Selections from John’s Book of Alleged Dances
Johannes Brahms – Clarinet Quintet in B Minor
This program has a magical quality, with mood shifts and unexpected contrasts filling the soulful gothic elegance of Harkness Chapel. First, a pair of Baroque works for violin and harp. Next, French horn and piano play a work Clara Schumann called "brilliant, fresh and passionate." The contrasts continue with a set of droll, sardonic miniatures by one of America’s most beloved living composers. Finally, the clarinet quintet by Brahms pairs a symphonic scale and emotional range with the intimate lyricism of chamber music.
