Talk and Tour at Playhouse Square features Broadway Buzz's Joe Garry
2:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Cleveland, Ohio - Cleveland Arts Prize is organizing a special afternoon at Playhouse Square on Monday, June 3, starting at 2pm at the Allen Theater, 1407 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland. Join us for light refreshments and socializing before a captivating talk by theatre history enthusiast and Cleveland Arts Prize 2021 Robert P. Bergman Prize recipient, Joe Garry. Following his talk, enjoy a curated tour of several of the theaters led by Playhouse Square staff. Tickets are $75 per person and can be purchased here.
Garry, an Emeritus Professor of Theatre at Cleveland State University and Playhouse Square Broadway Buzz presenter, will share his fascinating journey of staging the successful production of “Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris” in the lobby of the crumbling State Theater. Learn how this show, originally intended to run for only three weeks, became the longest-running show in Cleveland and Ohio history, selling out 550 shows for two-and-a-half years. Discover how this success contributed to saving Playhouse Square from demolition in the 1970s, making it the world’s largest theater restoration project and the second largest theater district in the country.
After the talk, embark on a curated tour of the historic theaters. Explore the grassroots movement that saved these iconic landmarks and witness the incredible restoration of their ornate facades, opulent interiors, and state-of-the-art facilities.
A portion of the proceeds will support the 2024 Cleveland Arts Prize.
