Welcome reception June 19 for new school superintendent Dixon

The Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District invites the community to a welcome reception for Talisa Dixon, the district’s new superintendent, on June 19, 6–8 p.m., in the Heights High Social Room at 13263 Cedar Road.

The reception is an opportunity for some to meet Dixon for the first time, and for others to welcome her as the new superintendent rather than as a superintendent candidate.

“It meant a lot to this board that so many people were actively involved in the search and interview process for a new superintendent. Even though the board made the final decision, Dr. Dixon was the community’s choice,” stated Ron Register, CH-UH Board of Education president. The board voted unanimously (5-0) to appoint Dixon superintendent.

“We are excited for the community to join us in welcoming Dr. Dixon,” said Angee Shaker, director of communications and community engagement. “We are planning an engaging, interactive welcome. It will give community members, as well as the new superintendent, an opportunity to learn more about our vital community partners.”

The evening will include welcome remarks from board members, city leaders, retiring Superintendent Nylajean R. McDaniel, and Dixon. Representatives from several community-support groups will provide brief summaries of their organizations and how they work in collaboration with the school district.

Later in the summer and into the fall, Dixon will meet with parents, city leaders and community groups for more in-depth conversations.

“I am deeply honored to be presented with the privilege of serving the students and the Cleveland Heights-University Heights communities,” said Dixon. “I will work diligently to foster a culture of mutual trust and respect among all constituents and community leaders. Every decision we make moving forward will be integral to creating a legacy of opportunity for our children. I’m already aware of some the challenges and opportunities, and I’m eager to listen and learn more from my staff, students and community. This will be a new beginning for all of us.”

Dixon is concluding her position as the Deputy Superintendent: Teaching & Learning for the Saginaw Public School District in Saginaw, Mich. She will take over the position of superintendent from McDaniel, who will retire on July 31.

Dixon began her professional career as an instructor at The University of Akron. She later taught high school social studies prior to serving as an assistant principal for Akron City Schools. She also served in two principal roles in the Columbus Schools. Dixon is a graduate of Mississippi Valley State University with a B.A. degree, and holds three M.A. degrees and an Ed.D. from The University of Akron.
