Heights High Symphony

The Heights High Symphony received a superior rating at the Ohio Music Education Association State Orchestra adjudication event.

Phyllis Seltzer

Phyllis Seltzer, Heights High alumna and artist, donated one of her prints, which will be hung at the remodeled high school.

Ron Register receives award

Ron Register, board president, will receive an award at the Ohio School Boards Association conference.

Public comments

Artificial turf:Several speakers, including coaches and football players, spoke in support of artificial turf for the football field. Resident Laura Marks spoke against artificial turf and asked the board to get more information.

Snow days, food in schools, Pathways:A parent from Canterbury Elementary School had questions about snow days, food brought into the school, and the Pathways program.

Field trips

The board approved field trips for the high school gospel choir and Spanish and French classes, a trip to the Junior Model United Nations Conference, and an environment trip for Roxboro Middle School students.

Race to the Top

In the update on Race to the Top, Alison Byrd, director of data and research, provided information about the new data information system the district will start using. Cleveland Heights-University Heights is a pilot district. Race to the Top will pay for the system for two years.

School buses

The board authorized the Ohio Schools Council Cooperative Purchasing Program to advertise and receive bids for school bus chassis and bodies for school year 2014–15.

Donations

The board accepted nearly $650 in donations.

Superintendent search

Register reported on the superintendent search. He said 10 people had completed the application process, seven have started it, and there have been about 23 inquiries.
