Reception for Karen Jones
Before the meeting there was a reception for Karen Jones who will be leaving the board at the end of the year.
Recognitions
Andrea Celico, assistant superintendant, and the board recognized the [achievements of the following] Heights High teams: boys soccer team (Lake Erie League champs, district semifinalists), girls soccer team (LEL co-champs, sectional finalists), and the football team (LEL champs, playoff quarterfinalists).
Ron Register, board president, thanked all who helped pass bond Issue 81. This included the three co-chairs, PTA presidents, volunteers and the voters. He stated that the early endorsement by the Heights Chapter of the League of Women Voters was very helpful.
Audience statements
Comments were made about school in session on Election Day, the accountability committee, the football field, and the high school open swim.
Field trips
The board approved field trips for the Men’s Barbershop Choir, the A Capella Choir, Heights Singers, and a high school social studies class.
Race to the Top
Joseph Micheller, director of curriculum and instruction, reported on the fourth year of Race to the Top.
Public education
Ari Klein, president of Cleveland Heights Teachers Union, discussed “The Principle That Unites Us,” a project supporting public education.
Stadium project
Stephen Shergalis, business services director, discussed the high school stadium project. The school district will pay for the grand stands, field and track. Fundraising will pay for the rest.
Fuel storage tank
The board approved a contract for a fuel storage tank at the Board of Education Building.
Donations
The board accepted donations [totaling] close to $3,700.
