GESU varsity baseball team wins first ever CYO City Championship

For the first time in the school's history, the eighth grade varsity baseball team from Gesu Catholic School in University Heights has won the CYO City Championship. The game was played on Sunday, May 22 at St. Monica’s School in Garfield Heights.

In the championship game, Gesu rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie St. Paschal Baylon and force extra innings play. Gesu went on to score five runs in the top of the eighth to win the school’s first ever CYO City Championship in the sport of baseball. The final score was Gesu 12, St. Paschal Baylon 8.

The team's road to the championship game included defeating Holy Family 17-0 on May 20 in the first round of play. In the semifinal game on Saturday, May 21, Gesu defeated St. Brendan/St. Richard 4-0 to reach the championship game against Eastside rival, St. Paschal Baylon.

During the championship game, Gesu Bulldogs Matt Mulhern, Tommy Murphy, Luke Diggs and Cameron Callahan all contributed RBI hits.

On the mound, Sam Danford, Peter Hyland and Luke Diggs combined to strikeout nine St. Paschal hitters to secure the win for the school.

The Gesu eighth grade varsity team concluded the season 7-0-1 and recorded its third consecutive undefeated season.

The team was managed by Jay Murphy and assisted by Lenny Soeder, Tim Mulhern and Jeff Lynn.
