11th Annual Poetry Slam is Nov. 18

Don't miss your chance to "spit" rhymes at the Library!

Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library is excited to announce the return of the teen Poetry Slam on Thursday, Nov. 18, at 5:30 p.m. at the Lee Road Library. Celebrating its 11th year, the Poetry Slam continues to grow in popularity and is one of the library’s most popular teen programs.

A poetry slam is a lyrical "boxing match" that pits poets against each other in the spirit of fun and creativity.  Slams put a dual emphasis on writing and performance, encouraging poets to focus on both what they are saying and how they are saying it. The performances are judged by a panel that rates the poetry and performance on a scale of 1 to 10. Prizes are awarded to the winners at the end of the event.

Two workshops have been developed to help prepare participants for the Poetry Slam. Presented by Slam Coach Amy Rosenbluth, the workshops give students professional feedback on their poems and help them prepare for their performance. The workshops are Thursday, Nov. 4 and 11, at 7 p.m. at the Lee Road Library. Students are encouraged to attend one or both workshops.

If you are not interested in performing, please come to cheer for our performers as they “spit” their rhymes with passion and furry.

If you have questions or would like more information on the Poetry Slam, please call Steve Haynie at 216-932-3600, ext. #292.

Tonya Davis is an employee of the Heights Libraries who enjoys writing and photography in her free time.
