Original Voices Book Club: Summer and Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton

Summer—penned in 1916 and published the following year—shares its staid New England setting with the earlier Ethan Frome. These two short novels were controversial for their depictions of the fragile balance between obligation and freedom and the forces of restraint against the allures of passion.
