This second Public Meeting builds upon that vision to identify policies, goals and actions that can achieve the community's vision.

The meeting will include a short presentation by the County Planning Commission staff, a brief question & answer period, and an opportunity for attendees to review proposed actions, provide feedback, and write down additional ideas.

HCC Meet-Up: Combat Educational Redlining - Let's Craft A Positive Message
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Join Heights Community Congress (HCC) in a solutions-oriented discussion to explore ways to combat educational redlining in our communities. Home sales websites use this technique to steer homebuyers away from moderate-income communities by rating their school districts poorly, based on faulty metrics.

Let's craft a positive, concise MESSAGE to convey our belief in the importance and value of our public schools. How would you summarize our message, so it would fit on a yard sign, a bumper sticker?

This discussion is a follow-up session of the Educational Redlining: Affecting Communities forum hosted by HCC and the South Euclid - Lyndhurst Experience Project in April 2016.

Enjoy one complimentary beverage courtesy of HCC if you sign up in advance.

Let's combat Educational Redlining. Let's craft a positive, concise MESSAGE!

EDUCATIONAL REDLINING AND SCHOOL RATINGS
The practice of redlining in real estate was made illegal by the passage of the Fair Housing Act in 1968; this landmark legislation prohibited redlining by mortgage lenders when their criteria were based on race, religion, sex, familial status, disability, or ethnic origin. But the Fair Housing Committee of HCC has uncovered an insidious form of redlining that takes place today in popular real estate websites, such as Zillow and Realtor.com

"School Rating" numbers appear on many national real estate websites and in some television advertising. These ratings provide a color-coded (green, yellow, red) number from 1 to 10 that purport to describe the schools around a house that's for sale. We asked, "Where do these numbers come from? How are colors assigned?"
