The Secret History of Jazz with artist and composer Paul Epstein
1:00 PM - 3:30 PM
Jazz is often said to be America's greatest and most original art form—truly, it could only have happened here. Most people, however, don't know what it is, how it works, or are aware of its tumultuous and compelling story. It is a story still being written, not just in art but in society at large. Its issues are still our issues. Its soul, our soul. "The Secret History of Jazz" is a two-and-a-half hour studio lecture of jazz history with melodic arrangements by composer Paul Epstein. In this studio, attendees view live recordings, video, and illustrated techniques at the piano, and trace Jazz's spiritual roots in African religions and musical practice, and the forms and harmonies it adopted from European classical music. Discussion on how an Establishment that recognized – and feared – jazz's subversive message and popular power tried to marginalize, minimize, co-opt, and even de-legitimize it.
