"Meet the Neighbors" Free Community Meal
Disciples Christian Church (formerly Euclid Avenue Christian Church) will offer a free, community meal on Thursday, August 28, from 5-6:30.
Disciples Christian is also home to the “Heights Emergency Food Center” (HEFC), which helps to feed hundreds of local families each month with a totally volunteer staff. Hazel Haffner, volunteer Director of HEFC, said all donation to HEFC go 100% towards food. She also said that the average number of individuals served last year was 300 monthly, mostly seniors. However, this year that number has jumped to nearly 1,000 every month. HEFC has extended hours on Thursday evenings, so the church hopes that many who are coming for their 3-day food supply will stay and enjoy a good meal on August 28.
This “Meet the Neighbors” meal is free and open to all.
Location:
The church is located at 3663 Mayfield Road, at the corner of Mayfield and Yellowstone, in Cleveland Heights. Phone 216 382-5344

Building Literacy Skills in Adults: An orientation for new volunteer tutors
Low literacy skills affect people of all ages in our community, from children who are not prepared for kindergarten to adults reluctant to vote because they cannot read the ballot. Fortunately, there is something you can do to help improve literacy in The Heights! Cleveland Reads provides free tutor training and refers volunteers to dozens of sites in Greater Cleveland.
The mission of Cleveland Reads is to build a community of literacy as the central resource and advocate for learners, tutors, and literacy providers. Volunteers attend a three-hour orientation which equips them with tools and strategies necessary to tutor youth or adults, and then are referred to one or more programs in the area. With the beginning of the school year, many literacy programs in the area will be seeking new volunteers, and we need your help! Please contact Cleveland Reads Volunteer Coordinator Jennifer Frigolette at 216-436-2116 for more information about becoming a volunteer literacy tutor.
