Walking Tour and Lecture: The Bluestone Brooks, Heart of the Eastern Inner Ring Landscape
Join us for a two-part exploration of the history and horticulture of our local watersheds, the bluestone brooks of Cleveland’s east side:
First we’ll walk along the Dugway Brook in Cumberland Park led by Pebbles Bush, Horticulturist with the Cleveland Metroparks and specialist in native plants. She will give us a guided tour of the brook plantscape and familiarize us with this natural habitat. Dress for hiking.
Then we’ll return to the Superior Schoolhouse for a lecture by Dr. Roy Larick, an archaeologist who has conducted archaeological field projects in Europe, Africa, Asia, and on both American continents and has most recently taken on local environmental and preservation issues. He will discuss the East Side's "bluestone brooks" (Doan, Dugway, Nine Mile and Euclid) which are streams in flux. They cut their deep channels in just 14 thousand years, and then, in just 150 years, local residents have filled and paved their courses and then dug massive sewer systems underneath. These changes led to the development of cities like Cleveland Heights, though remnants of these great brooks exist throughout Cleveland Heights. This presentation is full of interesting maps and historical photographs of the area’s brooks.
