Celebration of Lights at the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes
The Nature Center will be Illuminated in December with Celebration of Lights
Bring your family to the Nature Center ’s Celebration of Lights on Friday, December 19 5:30 PM – 8:00 PM for our annual event honoring the use of light as a symbol of celebration to welcome winter. Families and individuals are invited to take guided tours through the woods where they will learn how a variety of traditions illuminate the darkest days of the year.
This exploration of winter holidays and customs from around the world will engage people of all ages and cultures. Solstice celebrations represented include the natural science of the solstice; Norse traditions; the Tai tradition of Loi Krathong; the Ancient Roman Saturnalia winter-solstice festival; the Hebrew Festival of Lights; and the German tradition of decorating evergreen trees.
Group tours along the Stearns Trail depart every ten minutes from the Nature Center’s exhibit area (please note that there are stairs along the Stearns Trail). Following each tour, hot cider, cookies and additional family activities will be available for guests to enjoy inside the Nature Center . This is an outdoor program, so guests are advised to dress for the weather.
Fees for Celebration of Lights are: $10/adults members; $15/adult for non-members; $5/kids 12 & younger, members; $10/kids, non-members. Children 2 & under, free. Advanced registration for this event is required and timed tickets will be given; tours last approximately 40 minutes.
