Dobama is in transition, now moving from Coventry into new space at the Lee Road library.
You can ask them more about that on Saturday.

And, as you will notice when we see you at the show or after, our own building offers two bare bones performance spaces (and rehearsal space) where anyone interested might PUT ON A SHOW.

Handel's Messiah
Jeannette Sorrell and her colleagues bring to life the music and spectacle of Handel’s Messiah Parts I, II and III. Thousands of listeners have experienced the joy of Sorrell’s interpretation of this work on national radio broadcasts. Now Apollo’s Fire brings this theatrical drama back to Northeast Ohio for a series of special performances which will be recorded for live CD release. The four acclaimed soloists and “visionary storytellers” who performed to ecstatic crowds in 2006 make their triumphant return in these performances.

APOLLO’S SINGERS

The opportunity to hear the Apollo’s Fire Messiah is more than another hearing of a much-loved masterpiece. The size, scale, timbre and authentic of the Apollo’s Fire approach provides a singular opportunity. In the words of Music Director Jeannette Sorrell:

In the two-and-a-half centuries since Messiah was written, it has become a monument of western civilization – a musical icon of Anglo-American culture. The aesthetic of “bigger is better” has colored our impression of Messiah for nearly 200 years now, as is evidenced by some of the comments gathered from the 19th-century press by professor Howard Smither in a paper on Messiah: “I take it for granted that Messiah will now never be heard but in its improved [enlarged] condition,” (The Harmonicon, 1829), or “Whoever heard of a choir too large for Handel? Not though nations should be formed into choirs, would the true votary of Handel cry ‘Hold, enough!’“ (Musical Examiner, 1843). In 1859, Messiah was performed with a chorus of 2765 and an orchestra of 460.

In 2006, however, many of us are indeed crying, “hold, enough!” The coldness and anonymity of the high-tech age have made their mark on our society, leaving many of us with a longing for intimacy and individual personality. The fact that Apollo’s Fire performs Messiah on period instruments is not what matters. But if we can move you to tears as Susanna Cibber did – if we can make you see “All Heaven before you, and the great God himself ” – then we will have achieved real authenticity.

A pre-concert lecture with Richard Rodda begins at 7pm.

“This Messiah sparkled. It danced. It moved. And it brought the sold-out crowd to its feet.”
